theSun Motor Hunt 2008

This is for the benefit of my Sabahan friends who might be keen to go for a different kind of adventure holidays this year. TheSun Motor Hunt 2008 is now confirmed on 02 November, and the entry form may be downloaded from the Timeout Solutions website (it may take a while for the page to load).

I have attempted to invite some friends from KK to form a scrap team, but having received negative answers, I have decided to secure a ride with some friends from KL instead. In fact, we have rushed to register as soon as possible. At first I thought I could gain an advantage from registering early (not because we're afraid that we won't be in time to register), but it turned out that there isn't much advantage after all. But I will reveal more about this in time to come. I want to see what's gonna happen first.

Meanwhile, this morning a friend from KK—he's a strong hunter—said that his team might also join theSun. So I think the Open Category will be quite interesting this year! It would be nice if more Sabahan hunters would venture out to the west to try their luck.

In the mean time, the CoC must be having a tough time conjuring up questions for the treasures, now that the scope of search had suddenly been reduced by 132 items. But hopefully most of those items would have been put back onto the shelves by November.

Ah! Have I whetted your appetite, CK?

The target is 250 teams comprising 2 categories, i.e. Masters and Open. Lots of attractive prizes and lucky draws. If you're looking for pure hunts, then this is probably one of those few quality ones available in Malaysia. Well, of course mine is also one of those quality hunts lah... hahaha!

Why not give it a try, CK. Convince Teo, Leslie and Fred to do something big this year! Will be just nice for Teo after the marathon. By the way, he has just returned from Cambodia recently. (Very funny, Teo, the idea is to train on the track for the marathon, not makan angin to Cambodia!)

haha.... if Teo's doing wat i'm doing in Cambodia, it's almost like marathon too. I walked the whole day.

To my Sabahan friends who might be toying with the idea of joining this hunt, here's some more information that I've obtained from those who've joined past Sun Hunts.

The dinner, prize presentation etc will usually drag on till very late night, probably around 11pm on the same day of the hunt. In this case, it will be on Sunday night (02 November).

Apart from that, if you are good enough to reach the top 3 positions, there will be a play-off where those 3 teams will have to compete onstage. It means that it's a bad idea for any team members to escape before the end of the programme; for if it boils down to the play-off, the team with the lesser members would be at a disadvantage.

Since the programme will end very late at night, it is probably best to arrange to fly home on the following morning at the earliest. Unless of course if you intend to remain in KL for a few more days of shopping holidays.

Your title is motor hunt 2009? Good to have some Sabahan hunters here as well.

Oops! Sorry about that. Perhaps I was too excited when I posted that title!...hahahaha.

Ok, there you go... it's amended to 2008. Thanks for pointing it out.

Well, now I know!

There is not much difference submitting your entry form early. If they want to throw you into the master category, they will still do that, even at the eleventh hour!

The only benefit of registering early is that you're assured of participation, because there is a limit for the total number of teams.

Hard to believe that simply because one has clerked hunts before (although rarely), he is automatically inducted into the hall of fame. I wonder if anyone took the trouble to consider "quality" and "ability", rather than merely clerking hunts? Certainly, I haven't proven my quality and ability by winning open hunts, except as an apprentice passenger, riding with the masters.

And as far as my hunts are concerned, only a few masters have experienced them. The vast majority of masters have not tried my hunts, and are therefore unable to verify the quality and ability as well.

So it seems that not all in the master list are strong hunters, huh? Perhaps we should introduce the Grandmaster List above the Master List, just like in the world of chess?... hehehe

Any thoughts on this?

Fame has its price, my friend !
As the Chinses says, man should be cautious of getting famous and a porker of getting fat !

Chai,

The main criteria to make that hall of fame should be one's hunting ability; not fame (are you suggesting that I am famous?).

In the game of chess, for example, the players must earn their way up the ladder. They play other strong players in tournaments. As they win more games, their rating improve and eventually they will attain the International Master title; then grandmaster; then super grandmaster. On the sidelines, there will be many commentators and chess analysts. Some of these analysts are very good ones, but they don't automatically become grandmasters! If they want to be grandmasters, they must play and win!

I feel in order to be a treasure hunt "master", we should have some sort of system to ensure that only those who've won enough hunts should have that title; not merely because he or she has clerked hunts before.

Food for thought:

My personal opinion is that, if one doesn't like Proton cars, just don't buy! There are many people out there (unfortunately) who knowingly still buy, but does not stop berating their vehicle.

Here, we have 1 list, started by 1 company and used (almost exclusively) for some of their hunts, that has the support of the event organizers. This list is defined by their rules using a successful binary method of black or white with no grey zones. And likely this definition will never change.

Then we can ask the question of should we start a second list whose definition can be agreed by most? But looking at the history of hunts organized, what is the point to start a second list when hunts organized by other event companies usually do not have more than one category! Hmm!

We see such an attitude in our ruling government. Whenever someone from within questions the policy or decision of the leader, that will be interpreted as disloyalty. In some cases they will even be asked to leave the party: If you don't like this idea, then get the hell out!

My wife owns a Waja, and so far she has repaired her power window 3 times. But recently the driver's window is giving problem again (2nd time). She grumbles, she said she wants to consider Altis, maybe even a Toyota Hilux. But so far she's still driving the Waja. Not all of us can afford to simply buy a new car the moment we find there's something we dislike about our existing car, especially if you are a koo-hon person like my wife.

I will still hunt in theSun, whether I'm in the master or open category. I don't mind the challenge. If I have to fight, then I will fight, even against the best out there. However, if I can help it, I would like to hunt in the open category, and win that category first.

If the doors are to be shut upon us just because we're raising the question as to the selection criteria, we are behaving much like our ruling government. Take it or leave it. Well, I will still take it.

But I am hoping that the CoC will at least consider if there is any logic in my suggestion. To repeat, shouldn't those found in the master list consist of those who have proven themselves in terms of winning hunts, rather than just because they have clerked hunts?

Consider other options ... ride a bike, walk to work, take public transport .... hee hee.

Anyway my point has nothing to do with what we call "a government". It is just a matter of standing firm by your principles. Don't support an industry that you consider as being unfair or giving you the raw end of the deal. Force the culprit to improve. Without the public's support, these companies usually reach a Y decision - improve or go out of business!

Right or wrong, there is some logic to this CoC's decision. I guess, not any Tom, Dick or Harry can clerk a hunt, let alone a quality hunt.

And to your point about very few masters have joined your hunt. Believe me, although few have gone across the SCS, many HAVE seen your questions, and few would disagree that there are some well-thought of genuine ideas in this mix.

The last time I checked, we had around 15-16 daily return flights between KK and KL (combined AirAsia & MAS). So I have delayed purchasing the tickets for theSun Hunt. I wouldn't want to tempt the treasure hunt god, you see.

Usually, immediately after I buy the tickets, the hunt will be postponed or even cancelled somehow! But now it is so close to the hunt, and I have also secured a seat in a master team (I haven't met any of them in that team!). Time is running short, so I guess it's time for me to buy those tickets. Maybe someone will have to stay up and hold vigil for the next week, so that theSun will not be postponed! Keeping my fingers crossed... steady does it, Cornelius...
